The confrontation occurred as officers tried to apprehend Pass, who they claimed was armed with a knife. Upon a car stop on Bay 44th Street early Wednesday, Pass, wielding a knife, attempted to flee. In the ensuing chase, Pass engaged in a confrontation with officers, ultimately charging at them with the knife, prompting the police to open fire, resulting in Pass being shot multiple times.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell stated that the officers were left with no choice but to defend themselves as Pass charged at them with the knife. Pass sustained multiple gunshot wounds and, despite being rushed to NYU Langone Hospital, succumbed to his injuries. Several officers sought medical attention for ringing in the ears following the shooting.

Chell mentioned that the police made efforts to negotiate with Pass before resorting to the use of lethal force.

The tragic chain of events began when officers responded to a dispute at a building on Brooklyn Avenue in East Flatbush late Sunday evening. Surveillance footage revealed Pass engaged in an altercation with upstairs neighbors over noise. The situation escalated when Bladimy Muthurin, 47, his wife, and his 27-year-old stepson confronted Pass in the hallway after he knocked on their door. Pass, armed with a gun, shot and killed Muthurin and his stepson following an initial confrontation where Muthurin brandished scissors.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Pass calmly exited the building through an elevator. The suspect’s vehicle was identified through a license-plate reader, leading to the police attempting to apprehend Pass on Wednesday.

The police are investigating a theory suggesting that Pass may have had a past affiliation as a former corrections officer. The entire incident has been described by Chell as a “double horrific homicide.”
